CASA - How It Changed My Life For The Better
When I walk down the street, some people stop and stare, and, because they look and treat me differently, it makes me angry and self-conscious. It gets to a stage where I hate going into restaurants and bars, knowing the way some people will look and react towards me.
Life for me changed in 1986. A friend who has epilepsy told me that
he was joining CASA and it was a great social outlet for people with
special needs. So, I went with him to a social in Youghal. I was very
nervous, not knowing what to expect. I need not have worried. Everyone
was so friendly and open. Nobody looked at me strangely or treated
me differently. I knew then that I had found what I was looking for.
I remember when I was first invited to go on a CASA holiday. I immediately
agreed, but, as the time of departure grew nearer, I became more and
more nervous.
It was my first time away from home without my family
and I clearly remember getting on the bus, terrified, wondering how
I would possibly cope. Then I met my companion for the week and knew
straight away that I had made the right decision and would enjoy this
Holiday immeasurably.
